How to Join M.E.B.A.

Follow these simple steps to become part of America’s oldest and most forward-thinking maritime union.

After you’ve made the decision to join M.E.B.A, you only need to follow a few simple steps to complete your membership and start enjoying the benefits.

The Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (M.E.B.A.) represents licensed marine engineers and deck officers working across the U.S. merchant fleet. Joining MEBA gives you access to some of the best contracts, wages, and benefits in the industry—including pension, medical coverage, and training opportunities.

Step 1: Complete the M.E.B.A. Application Form

Fill out the official membership application. This form provides your basic information and documents your eligibility. You can request a copy from your local M.E.B.A. hall or download it here.( hyperlink)

Step 2: Have Your Application Notarized

Once you’ve filled out the application, have it notarized. This quick step enables the union limited power of attorney so they can take your initiation fee out of your vacation. Many banks, shipping halls, and local offices offer notary services—often at little or no cost.

Step 3: Gather Your Coast Guard Documents and Current Physical

Bring all of your valid Coast Guard documents (license, endorsements, medical certificate, TWIC card, etc.) and a current Coast Guard 719K physical completed within the last year. Having your credentials up to date ensures a faster process of verifying your eligibility for dispatch once you’re a part of M.E.B.A.

Step 4: Prepare Your Initial Dues Payment

To process your application, M.E.B.A. requires the first quarterly dues payment of $150.00. This can be made by check or cash. Make checks payable to M.E.B.A. Bringing your payment when you submit your application ensures a smooth and timely enrollment process.

Step 5: Submit Your Application, Documents, and Payment

Bring your notarized application, Coast Guard documents, current physical, and your initial dues payment to the nearest M.E.B.A. hall or authorized representative. Our staff will review your paperwork, answer any questions you have, and guide you through the next steps. The dispatcher will then register you for a shipping card that will be used to designate your seniority in the shipping process.

Step 6: Start Enjoying Your Benefits

Once your application has been approved and processed, you’ll officially be a part of M.E.B.A. You’ll gain access to union contracts and job opportunities, and after 30 days of employment you will have access to benefits and training programs, plus a network of maritime professionals who share your commitment to excellence.

For more than a century, M.E.B.A. has been the oldest maritime labor union in the U.S.—and the most forward-looking. We’ve negotiated some of the strongest contracts, best wages, and most comprehensive benefits in the maritime industry. Joining M.E.B.A. isn’t just signing up for a union; it’s stepping into a community of professionals dedicated to protecting and advancing your career.

Ready to get started? Download the application (hyperlink), gather your Coast Guard documents, get your physical and notary done, and bring everything—including your $150.00 dues payment—to your local M.E.B.A. hall. You’ll be on your way to a stronger, more secure maritime future.
