Jay Wedman Q&A: M.E.B.A. Training Benefits

April 19, 2024

Here I will address some of the questions about the training benefits and how you can best utilize them once becoming a part of M.E.B.A.

Q: If we vote for M.E.B.A. will OSG still honor their reimbursement plan for Chief Mate classes I have already taken?

A: M.E.B.A. intends on leaving no mate behind and will work diligently to negotiate terms in the contract that ensures OSG reimburses those who have already taken their classes and have yet to be reimbursed.

Q: How many days do I need to work to be eligible to use the training benefits offered by M.E.B.A.?

A: The training program is available to participants with 30 days of covered employment every year in order to maintain your eligibility.

Q: How much does it cost to go to the Calhoon M.E.B.A. Engineering School (CMES)?

A: It costs you nothing. While attending CMES, the Training Plan pays for members’ travel, food, and lodging while staying at CMES and all fees associated with training.

Q: Can I bring my family to CMES with me?

A: CMES prides itself on providing a fun and relaxing atmosphere for its members and their families while they are in attendance, and allowing the members the opportunity to have family time while they are taking required training. Extra rooms can even be secured as needed if you have a large family.

Q: If I am not able to attend the school because of scheduling will the training program pay for me to take classes elsewhere?

A:  When the school’s schedule does not fit your work or life schedule, a member has the option of attending classes at other USCG approved locations and the tuition is covered by the Plan. For alternate locations, deck officer room and board is also often covered by the Training Plan if inclusive with the class cost.

Keep these questions coming and I look forward to seeing you in person the next time I am out on your vessel.
